If you’re like me and hate washing your hair, then this is the post for you. With these tips, I will show you how I went from washing my hair everyday, to washing it once a week without looking like a greasy mess. I even think washing it less has made my hair healthier! Here are my best tips to prevent and get rid of greasy hair:
Wash It Less
I know, I know, how is this a tip, right? I used to have such oily hair I would wash it every day and it would still look greasy by the end of the day. Washing your hair too much or too often will strip your hair of it’s natural oils. So, your hair will produce more oil to compensate.
Washing hair too much = extra oil production, whereas, washing hair less = less oil production.
Start off with washing it every other day, then every 2 days, etc. This method makes the transition easier on you and your hair. Yes, your hair will be greasy but I promise you it will get better. Before I couldn’t even go a day without getting oily. Now, I can go about 4 days without any oil at all! It will take a few months for your hair to get used to it, but eventually the oil production will decrease.
Another added benefit of washing less is that you use less product. Shampoo, conditioner, detangled,, mousse, whatever you use on it will last way longer and you will save a ton of money!
Use Better Products
Now I’m not saying you have to go spend $100 on shampoo and conditioner. There are plenty of salon quality and drugstore products out there that will be much better on your hair. This will take some experimenting to see what your hair likes.
The major thing you want to look out for and avoid are sulfates. Especially, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). These are harsh sulfates that will strip your hair. Fun fact: these ingredients are often found in household cleaning products! You definitely don’t want to be putting those on your hair.
Here are some of my favorite sulfate free brands to check out. I’ve included some from the drugstore, as well as salon brands, based on your budget. Many of them also have multiple rages so you can pick and choose based on your specific hair needs. I’ve used products from each of these brands and I absolutely love them all!

Dry Shampoo
An absolute must have. When your hair starts looking a little greasy, just section off your hair and spray on the roots. Massage it in and brush it out and you’re good to go! The best thing to do it apply it at night. That way, it will absorb all the oil overnight and you will wake up with refreshed hair!
Now, all my fellow dark-headed girls, you must, I mean MUST, get a tinted dry shampoo. Otherwise, you will look like an old lady with grey hair. I’m not kidding. I have dark brown hair and made the mistake of getting a regular dry shampoo. I couldn’t get the white tint out of my hair no matter how much I brushed it out. Never again will I make that mistake. So, please, let me spare you the trouble and just get it from the get-go.
My absolute favorite dry shampoo is Batiste. Specifically, this one, made for dark hair. But, they have others for lighter hair, and others with different scents and benefits. I’ve been using Batiste for over 4 years now. I’ve experimented with other brands, even expensive brands, and I always come back to Batiste.
As soon as my hair starts to get a little oily, I just spray this on and I’m good to go for another couple days. It’s a lifesaver. I promise it will change your life. It will also help you during the transition period of washing your hair less. It absorbs the oil and refreshes your hair so you won’t feel dirty or gross while your hair is adjusting.
With these tips, I guarantee that you will be able to wash your hair less and get healthier hair in the process! I hope you found this helpful and will try them out. Comment down below if you try them out and let me know how they work for you!
