How often should you exfoliate oily skin? It’s usually better to exfoliate oily, acne prone skin every day. Is it really ok to exfoliate everyday? Yes, as long as your skin can handle it! It’s perfectly fine to exfoliate oily skin daily, just make sure that you aren’t over-exfoliating your skin.

Is it ok to exfoliate 3 times a week only if you have oily or acne-prone skin? Absolutely! These are just general recommendations and skincare is so personal, it will vary from person to person. You’ll likely have to do some experimenting to find how often your skin likes to be exfoliated.

I used to have very oily skin, but once I began exfoliating and using a better skincare routine, my skin balanced out and it’s more normal now. You might have the same changes when you begin exfoliating oily skin because sometimes it can reduce oil production!

How Often Should You Exfoliate Your Face – Dry Skin?

What about those with drier skin? Usually with drier skin types, you won’t need to exfoliate so much, so stick with 1x or 2x a week, depending on how your skin feels. With dry skin, typically you should not exfoliate everyday or even every other day.

How Often Should You Exfoliate Sensitive Skin?

If you have sensitive skin, stick with gentle exfoliants and exfoliate no more than 1x or 2x a week.

How Often Should You Exfoliate Your Face If You Have Acne

how often is it safe to exfoliate your face?

Exfoliating is one of the main treatments for acne, but that doesn’t mean you should go overboard with exfoliants for acne-prone skin. When exfoliating acne-prone skin, you want to take your skin type into consideration. You can have sensitive or dry skin and still have acne!

You don’t want to make acne worse by over-exfoliating, so remember, less is more.

If you have acne, you should exfoliate 3-4x a week or up to everyday, unless your skin is particularly sensitive or dry.

How Often Should You Exfoliate Your Body?

Like your face, your body can use a good exfoliation, too! The skin on your body is typically less sensitive than that on our face, so we can usually exfoliate it more often and use stronger products.

When it comes to exfoliating your body, you should aim for 2-3x a week, unless your skin is particularly sensitive, then stick with 1x a week.

Sugar scrubs are a great way to soften your skin and get rid of any dead skin cells. It’s also a good idea to spend extra time on the places you shave to prevent ingrown hairs and help get the smoothest skin possible.

When it comes to your body skin, should you exfoliate everyday? As long as you aren’t using a super harsh scrub or scrubbing at your skin hard, then you can definitely exfoliate daily.

Is It Ok To Exfoliate Everyday?

If you’ve ever wondered “can I exfoliate my face daily?” you may be wondering if it’s safe to exfoliate daily. While exfoliating every day can be perfectly fine on certain skin types, you definitely need to be careful if you have dry, dehydrated or sensitive skin.

If you’re using gentle exfoliants, like enzymes, then those can safely be used each day. However, if you’re using strong exfoliants like multi-acid products or tretinoin, it’s best to use those only a few times a week.

Should I Exfoliate In The Morning or At Night?

A commonly asked question about exfoliation is when is the best time to exfoliate? The answer is almost always at night. Most exfoliants will make you skin more sensitive to the sun, so it’s best to use them at night when you’re indoors. Sunlight can also degrade certain exfoliants, which means they will quit working when exposed to the sun.

Do You Exfoliate Before or After Cleansing?

Always exfoliate after cleansing so you remove any makeup, dirt or oils before using an exfoliant. Even if it’s a physical exfoliant, always wash your face beforehand.

Which Type Of Exfoliator Should I Use?

how often to use a physical and chemical exfoliant

When it comes to exfoliation, there are two main types: physical exfoliation and chemical exfoliation. Physical exfoliants are things like scrubs, wash cloths, devices, etc. Chemical exfoliants are use chemicals (like AHA, BHA, or retinol) to exfoliate the skin. They are usually something you apply and leave on.

Physical Exfoliation

For the most part, it’s recommended to use physical exfoliation less than you would chemical exfoliation. This is because physical exfoliants tend to be harsh on our skin and can cause little tears and damage. However, some people prefer physical exfoliation over chemical, and that’s perfectly fine!

If physical exfoliation seems to work best for your skin, then stick with it! Just make sure you are using a gentle exfoliator. I recommend a gentle scrub (no walnut shells, seeds or sugar) or a microfiber wash cloth.

Chemical Exfoliation

Chemical exfoliators use, well, chemicals to exfoliate dead skin away and speed up cell turnover. Most chemical exfoliants are meant to be left on the skin, but they also come in peel form, where you apply the peel, leave it on your skin for a while and then rinse it off.

There are also a few different types of chemical exfoliants:

  • AHA
  • BHA exfoliants
  • Retinoids
  • Enzymes

Essentially, chemical exfoliants work by removing the “glue” that holds skin cells together. Without exfoliation, dead skin cells just sit on top of our skin and cause acne, rough texture and dull skin. So, when you exfoliate your skin, you are removing all of that dead skin and revealing fresh skin that glows!

AHA’s, or alpha hydroxy acids, are a great choice for exfoliating dry skin, as they tend to be more gentle and don’t penetrate as deep in the skin.

BHA’s, or beta hydroxy acids, are a great option for exfoliating oily skin because they are oil soluble. This means they are able to cut through the oil on your skin and penetrate deeper for extra exfoliation. BHA’s also have anti-bacterial properties and can kill acne causing bacteria.

Retinoids are great for anyone to use in their routine, as they help acne, anti-aging, hyperpigmentation, oily skin and large pores. Retinoids can be drying and irritating so it’s important to use them correctly.

Be sure to learn how to use retinoids the right way so you don’t end up damaging your skin!

Enzyme exfoliants are great for dry and sensitive skin type! They are super gentle and work well at removing dead skin without being too harsh.

It all depends on your skin type and how your skin reacts to exfoliation, along with what kind of exfoliant you are using.

Can I Use Multiple Forms Of Exfoliants?

Yes! In fact, the best routine will have multiple forms of exfoliants in them! Since each type of exfoliant has different properties and they each work a bit differently, they will have slightly different effects. Therefore, it’s great to use physical and chemical exfoliants in your routine.

Additionally, you can also use different forms of chemical exfoliants in your routine. For example, it’s fine to use BHA and AHA, or BHA and retinoids in the same routine.
