Are you confused about how often you should be exfoliating your skin? Should you exfoliate your face differently from you body? Should you exfoliate everyday? Exfoliating can be tricky to nail down in your routine. If you exfoliate too much, then you can cause serious damage to your skin, so you want to make sure you’re doing it right.
So, that leaves us with some questions: how often is it ok to exfoliate? Should I exfoliate every day?
Those are questions we are going to answer today! Plus, we’ll dive into the difference in exfoliating your body vs. your face so we can take proper care of our skin from head to toe.
What Does Exfoliation Do For Skin
Exfoliation is a must have step in anyone’s skincare routine! Exfoliating your skin has so many amazing benefits. Exfoliation is particularly effective for those with acne prone skin. There are different types of exfoliants, which we will talk about later.
Benefits Of Exfoliation
- Treats and prevents acne
- Unclogs pores
- Helps your skincare products work better
- Brightens skin tone
- Fades sun spots, scars and hyperpigmentatin

How Often Should You Exfoliate Your Face?
How often to exfoliate your face, will depend on your skin type!
How Often Should You Exfoliate Normal Skin?
For those with normal skin, it should be enough to exfoliate about 3x a week.
How Often Should You Exfoliate Oily Skin?
How often should you exfoliate oily skin? It’s usually better to exfoliate oily, acne prone skin every day. Is it really ok to exfoliate everyday? Yes, as long as your skin can handle it! It’s perfectly fine to exfoliate oily skin daily, just make sure that you aren’t over-exfoliating your skin.
I used to have very oily skin, but once I began exfoliating and using a better skincare routine, my skin balanced out and it’s more normal now. You might have the same changes when you begin exfoliating oily skin because sometimes it can reduce oil production!
How Often Should You Exfoliate Dry Skin?
What about those with drier skin? Usually with drier skin types, you won’t need to exfoliate so much, so stick with 1x or 2x a week, depending on how your skin feels. With dry skin, typically you should not exfoliate everyday or even every other day.
How Often Should You Exfoliate Sensitive Skin?
If you have sensitive skin, stick with gentle exfoliants and exfoliate no more than 1x or 2x a week.
How Often Should You Exfoliate Your Body?
Like your face, your body can use a good exfoliation, too! The skin on your body is typically less sensitive than that on our face, so we can usually exfoliate it more often and use stronger products.
When it comes to exfoliating your body, you should aim for 2-3x a week, unless your skin is particularly sensitive, then stick with 1x a week.
Sugar scrubs are a great way to soften your skin and get rid of any dead skin cells. It’s also a good idea to spend extra time on the places you shave to prevent ingrown hairs and help get the smoothest skin possible.
When it comes to your body skin, should you exfoliate everyday? As long as you aren’t using a super harsh scrub or scrubbing at your skin hard, then you can definitely exfoliate daily.
Which Type Of Exfoliator Should I Use?
When it comes to exfoliation, there are two main types: physical exfoliation and chemical exfoliation. Physical exfoliants are things like scrubs, wash cloths, devices, etc. Chemical exfoliants are use chemicals (like AHA, BHA, or retinol) to exfoliate the skin. They are usually something you apply and leave on.
For the most part, it’s recommended to use physical exfoliation less than you would chemical exfoliation. This is because physical exfoliants tend to be harsh on our skin and can cause little tears and damage. However, some people prefer physical exfoliation over chemical, and that’s perfectly fine!
If physical exfoliation seems to work best for your skin, then stick with it! Just make sure you are using a gentle exfoliator. I recommend a gentle scrub (no walnut shells, seeds or sugar) or a microfiber wash cloth.
Chemical exfoliators use, well, chemicals to exfoliate dead skin away and speed up cell turnover. Most chemical exfoliants are meant to be left on the skin, but they also come in peel form, where you apply the peel, leave it on your skin for a while and then rinse it off.
There are also a few different types of chemical exfoliants:
- BHA exfoliants
Essentially, chemical exfoliants work by removing the “glue” that holds skin cells together. Without exfoliation, dead skin cells just sit on top of our skin and cause acne, rough texture and dull skin. So, when you exfoliate your skin, you are removing all of that dead skin and revealing fresh skin that glows!
AHA’s, or alpha hydroxy acids, are a great choice for exfoliating dry skin, as they tend to be more gentle and don’t penetrate as deep in the skin.
BHA’s, or beta hydroxy acids, are a great option for exfoliating oily skin because they are oil soluble. This means they are able to cut through the oil on your skin and penetrate deeper for extra exfoliation. BHA’s also have anti-bacterial properties and can kill acne causing bacteria.
Retinoids are great for anyone to use in their routine, as they help acne, anti-aging, hyperpigmentation, oily skin and large pores. Retinoids can be drying and irritating so it’s important to use them correctly.
Be sure to learn how to use retinoids the right way so you don’t end up damaging your skin!
Enzyme exfoliants are great for dry and sensitive skin type! They are super gentle and work well at removing dead skin without being too harsh.
Should You Exfoliate Everyday?
There’s so much different information out there about how often you should exfoliate. Many people think you should exfoliate everyday, but the truth is, that for most skin types, exfoliating everyday is too much.
However, if your skin can handle it, and you see good results with daily exfoliation then you should exfoliate everyday! If you’re using a very strong acid exfoliants, then you should not exfoliate everyday.
Should you exfoliate everyday with a gentle physical exfoliant? Sure! I love Konjac sponges because they are so gentle on your skin and perfect for exfoliating everyday.
It all depends on your skin type and how your skin reacts to exfoliation, along with what kind of exfoliant you are using.
Can I Use Multiple Forms Of Exfoliants?
Yes! In fact, the best routine will have multiple forms of exfoliants in them! Since each type of exfoliant has different properties and they each work a bit differently, they will have slightly different effects. Therefore, it’s great to use physical and chemical exfoliants in your routine.
Additionally, you can also use different forms of chemical exfoliants in your routine. For example, it’s fine to use BHA and AHA, or BHA and retinoids in the same routine.
How Do You Know If You’ve Over Exfoliated?
Unfortunately, over-exfoliating your skin is easy to do, especially if you use multiple forms of exfoliation in your routine. That’s why it’s important to know the signs of over-exfoliated skin, so you can be aware and stop using exfoliating products if you need to.
Usually, it’s pretty easy to tell when you’ve over-exfoliated your skin.
Here are some signs to look for:
- Rough or bumpy skin
- Shiny looking skin
- Skin that feels tight
- Burning or stinging
If you are experiencing these signs, it’s a good indication that you have over exfoliated your skin and should cut back how often you exfoliate your skin.
What Exfoliating Ingredients Should I Look For?
When you’re searching for exfoliants, it can be helpful to have a list of ingredients to look out for.
- AHA’s (glycolic, lactic or mandelic acids)
- BHA (salicylic acid)
- Jojoba beads
For the most part, how often you should exfoliate will depend on your skin and you will probably have to do some experimenting to find out how often works best for you.
