As humans, we tend to focus on the negative aspects of situations we may find ourselves in. This means we tend to have a negative mindset and attitude naturally. Unfortunately, having a negative mindset and attitude can really affect our mental health and happiness in life. So how do we go about changing our mindset and attitude to be more positive when we are naturally inclined to be negative?
Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to improve your mindset and have a more positive outlook on life.
I’m going to teach you all the techniques I use to change my mindset in so many different ways! You can change your mindset and attitude to be more positive or even change your mindset for success. These techniques can be used in so many different aspects of your life and help you grow as a person.
What Is Mindset And Attitude?
A mindset is simply how you view or see the world. And your attitude is your response people or situations that we encounter in life. So, as you can see, mindset and attitude are connected. This is important to note because if we really want to improve our mindset, we need to also improve our attitude. They go hand in hand.
There are two main types of mindsets. You either have what is called a fixed mindset or a growth mindset.
A Fixed Vs. Growth Mindset
When you have a fixed mindset, you believe that you are static and cannot change or grow. Essentially, you have your abilities, talent or knowledge and cannot improve upon those or grow any more. This means you don’t work to improve certain traits or qualities.
Fixed mindset: “I can’t do this”, “I’ll never be able to do that”
With a growth mindset, you believe that your abilities and knowledge can grow with time and experience. You can work on improving your abilities by experimenting, learning and practice.
Growth mindset: “I can do anything I want”, “I can learn and be successful”
See the big differences between the two mindsets?
Positive, Negative & Neutral Attitudes
There are 3 main types of attitudes: positive, negative and neutral.
Those with a positive attitude will generally focus on the good in life or a situation and see failure as an opportunity for growth.
People with a negative attitude will not see the good in a situation and tend to dwell on the negative aspects in life. They are more likely to complain about a situation rather than adapt.
If you have a neutral attitude, you tend to be indifferent to people or situations and you may tend to ignore problems or conflicts.

There are tons of great benefits to having the right mindset and attitude in life, and some of them may surprise you! Having a positive mindset and attitude will help in nearly all aspects of your life, from your career to your personal relationships and mental health.
- Longer lifespan

How To Change Your Mindset And Attitude
Now let’s take a look at how to improve your mindset and attitude so we can reap all of those amazing benefits!
1. Positive Language
Take a look at how you speak to others and yourself. You’ll be surprised at how often you bring negative words into the conversation. The first step at improving your mindset and attitude is being aware of how you are communicating. What language are you using? Are you using positive or negative words?
Just start taking mental notes of how you communicate with others.
2. Positive Self Talk

The main issue most people have when they have a negative mindset or attitude, is how they are communication with themselves and how they think of themselves. We all have dialogues going on throughout our heads all day, and how many of those are positive? How many are negative?
Most of us are guilty of negative self talk and thinking things like “I’m not good enough to be successful” or “I’ll never get that promotion.”
I know I am very guilty of negative self talk.
What goes on inside your head is a reflection of you mindset and attitude.
To fix this, we need to change the way we are talking about ourselves by practicing positive self talk.
There are many ways you can practice positive self talk. You can start with affirmations to write down or repeat to yourself. Or even write little notes to yourself and leave around the house.
Here are some of my favorite affirmations to tell myself:
- I am capable of learning, growing and doing better
- I am doing my best
- My possibilities are endless
- I am proud of myself and what I did today
- I believe in me
3. Practice Gratitude
You can drastically improve your mindset and attitude just by doing this one simple task each day. If you only pick one thing to do that will improve your mindset and attitude, pick this one.
Practicing gratitude is such an easy way to improve your mindset. By doing this you will become more appreciative and you will be training your mind to focus on the good in situations and your life.
Each day I like to come up with at least 3 things I am grateful for that particular day. If you can come up with more, that’s great! Once you come up with a few, I bet you’ll be able to keep going and think of a lot of positive things you are grateful for.
4. Live In The Present
When you’re constantly dwelling on the past or worrying about the future, it’s hard to stay positive! Focus on what you can do right now to get where you want to be. Thinking about what you should have done in the past will only make you feel bad about yourself. And wondering what to do in the future will only stress you out.
5. Positive People

If you’re constantly surrounded by negative people or people who bring out the worst in you, you are never going to be able to improve your mindset or attitude. Surround yourself with positive people and the positivity will rub off on you as well! Plus you will be less stressed because you cut out those toxic people.
Having the right friends can also help motivate and encourage you to be your best self. They help you grow, learn and create a positive atmosphere.
6. Envision Yourself
Ask yourself what would make you happy in life. And write down everything that comes to mind. And be specific! Don’t just say “I want a house.” What kind of house, where will the house be, how many rooms, etc.
You can also create a vision board for this!
Now that you have pictured yourself, you can take actionable steps to make this a reality! The vision board will motivate you to work on yourself and your goals and keep you in a positive mindset.
7. Set Goals

Now that you have a vision board full of what you want in life, it’s time to make a plan and make those dream a reality! It’s helpful to start with one at a time. And remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day!
Don’t get depressed when you look at your vision board and think “all of this will never happen!” It will, you just have to work for it and be patient.
Pick out the one thing you want more than anything else. And come up with a plan on how to get there. Do you need to save money for it? Make a budget and stick to it. Do you need to learn a new skill? Take a class or read some books and teach yourself.
8. Morning Routine

Having a healthy morning routine was key for changing my mindset and attitude. When you start your day off right and on a positive note, it helps boost your mood and keep that positivity all day!
Here are some things I like to do in the morning to help start my day:
- Meditate
- Exercise
- Read positive/motivational quotes
- Eat a healthy breakfast
- Drink lots of water
- Listen to music that puts me in a good mood
Now I don’t do all of these every morning, but depending on how much time I have I will pick one or two to do. If you can do more, that’s great, too!
Feel free to come up with your own morning routine that helps boost your mood.
9. Write Down Your Wins
At the end of each day, I love to write down all my “wins” for the day. This can be anything you accomplished or anything that makes you feel proud. Maybe you submitted a huge project on time or your boss complimented your work. Or perhaps you ate healthy and did a workout today.
I hope you enjoyed this post on how to change your mindset and attitude and live a more positive and happy life. These tips have really helped me become a more positive person each and every day.
