Rough skin is an annoying problem to have, and it can be hard to get rid of. Many times it’s just not as simple as using an exfoliant in your skincare routine. So how exactly do you get silky, smooth skin?
There are many factors that contribute to rough skin on your face or body. So, it’s important to look at what can be causing your skin to be rough. This will help you figure out what to do to get smoother skin.
For most people, you can get smooth skin with just a couple tweaks in your skincare routine. However, if you have other skin conditions like eczema or rosacea, it might be a little harder for you to get smoother skin.
So, let’s get started and learn how to get smooth skin!
What Causes Rough Skin
Before we get into how to get smooth skin, we need to talk about why skin gets rough in the first place. Rough skin can be caused by certain skin conditions, your skincare routine, the environment or a compromised moisture barrier.
Once we know what’s causing your skin to be rough, it will be easier to make changes to your routine or lifestyle so you can get smooth skin.
In general, these are the main causes of rough skin:
- Compromised moisture barrier
- Skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, etc)
- Allergies to certain ingredients
- Using the wrong skincare ingredients (harsh/drying products)
- Moisture loss
- Build up of dead skin cells
Usually, making a few changes in your skincare routine takes care of these issues and rough skin. However, sometimes you may need to see a dermatologist if your skin doesn’t respond to these changes and rough skin is persistent.
How To Get Smooth Skin On Your Face
Now that we’ve identified what causes rough skin, now we can use that information to pinpoint what we need to change in our skincare routine to get smoother skin.
1. Use A Hyaluronic Acid Serum
The first step in getting smoother skin is making sure your skin is nice and hydrated. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in our bodies and binds to water molecules, keeping them in our skin. This, in turn, keeps our skin hydrated, plump and dewy looking.
When your skin is dehydrated, that means your skin is lacking water. Dehydrated skin can also be very rough in texture and look dull. When you add hyaluronic acid, it will lock in moisture and keep it from escaping, which leads to dehydrated skin.
The first time you use a hyaluronic acid serum, you will notice an improvement immediately! Your skin will instantly feel smoother and plump. It’s one of the best things you do can do to get smooth skin.
2. Chemical Exfoliants
Chemical exfoliants such as AHA, BHA and retinoids help shed dead skin cells that are stuck on the surface of your skin. When dead skin cells build up, it can cause rough skin and also lead to other issues like acne, blackheads and clogged pores.
Chemical exfoliants work by helping shed dead skin cells so they don’t get stuck or built up on your skin. They work relatively quickly at smoothing out your skin.
Check out my post on chemical exfoliants to figure out which one is right for your skin.
3. Physical Exfoliants
Although chemical exfoliation is best, sometimes it can be helpful to add a little gentle physical exfoliation to get smooth skin. The key is gentle. Overexfoliating and being too rough with your skin can actually make rough skin worse.
I like using a gentle microfiber cloth or a konjac sponge. For cleansing devices, a Clarisonic with the sensitive brush head and Foreo’s are great options.
4. Moisturize Regularly
The best thing you can do for rough skin is moisturize it well! Especially if you are exfoliating with chemical or physical exfoliants. If you aren’t moisturizing your skin 2x a day, start doing that like, now.
When your skin is dry or dehydrated, it will often feel rough and have lots of texture, so moisturizing is key. You also need a well formulated moisturizer for your skin type.
If you have oily skin, look for gel or light cream moisturizers. If you have more dry skin, stick with creams or lotions.
Once you start moisturizing regularly, you’ll get smooth skin in no time! You should see a difference in just a couple days.
5. Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant that protects our skin from environmental damage. Damaged skin is more susceptible to dehydration and dryness, and therefore, rough skin.
Vitamin C will help repair and protect your skin from damage and keep it from getting dehydrated and rough in the first place.
6. Drink Lots Of Water
Although topical skincare is great and effective, you also need to be taking care of your skin from the inside out! Since dry and dehydrated skin is such a big cause of rough skin, it’s important to make sure that you’re staying hydrated each day.
Aim to drink at the very least 64oz of water each day. But honestly, you really do need much more than that. I typically drink at least 120oz of water a day.
How To Get Smooth Skin On Your Body
Although, many of the tips above will help you get smooth skin on your body, there are some extra things you can do for smooth skin all over. Because your facial skin is more sensitive and delicate, you have to be careful with exfoliation. On your body, however, you can use stronger ingredients and scrubs.
In addition to the tips above, you can try these out as well.
1. Dry Brush
Dry brushing is great for anyone wanting to smooth out their skin. It also has added benefits like lymphatic drainage, firmer skin and some people even claim it helps with stretch marks and cellulite.
Dry brushing is exactly like it sounds: brushing skin that is dry. It works best on skin that doesn’t have any product or lotion on it. I personally like to dry brush before I hop in the shower or bath.
2. Italy Towel
You’ve probably never heard of an Italy Towel before, but they are amazing at getting off dead skin. An Italy Towel is just an exfoliating mitt or towel, similar to those exfoliating gloves I know you’ve seen before. I find the Italy towels work so much better than those!
The best way to use them is to hop in the shower or bath and let the hot water soften your skin. Then use your Italy towel and you can literally see the deal skin coming off. Your skin will never be so smooth!
If you struggle with rough and bumpy skin on your body, you need an Italy Towel! It will get you smooth skin instantly.
3. Moisturize & Exfoliate
For body skin, there are lots of great moisturizers out there with ingredients that will help shed dead skin cells. Essentially they are 2-in-1 products that moisturize and exfoliate at the same time. And I am all about convince and simplicity! Plus, they work very well.
I’ll leave my product recommendations down below, but look for ingredients like AHA, BHA, and urea to help exfoliate and get smooth skin.
Remember, the most important thing you can do to get smooth skin, is keeping your skin hydrated. The next step is using exfoliation and other products to help get smooth skin. With these 2 things, you will have smooth, soft and glowing skin in no time.
