A glow up challenge belongs in every girl’s arsenal. Mentally, physically or spiritually, you can glow up any time you want. Before school, vacation, a wedding or just because you want to work on yourself for once. Although physical beauty is a big part of the term glow up, it can also involve mental, spiritual and emotional growth or change. With this in mind, there are so many ways you can glow up and truly change your life and your confidence! If you’re wondering how to glow up naturally, then you’re in the right place.
What Is A Glow Up?
If you’re not sure exactly what a glow up is or have never even heard of glowing up, here’s a quick run down:
A glow up is a mental, physical, emotional or spiritual change that changes you for the better.
A glow up can happen naturally, like during puberty, or can happen because of you doing something to better yourself, like eating healthier and being more active to live a healthier lifestyle.
A glow up is the act of doing things that make you feel good. When you’re in a rut, when you aren’t really happy with your life or when something bad happens, making changes to how you live and what you do can help turn your life around. It can be hard work but it will definitely pay off.
Why Is It Called A Glow Up?
Although you’ve probably seen the term glow up or glo up all over social media in recent years, the origin of the term is unclear. Like anything with social media, it just started somewhere and became a huge trend!
It’s called a glow up because you are improving on something in your life. Whether it’s your physical appearance, personal growth, spirituality or something else, a glow up can allow you to grow in many different areas in your life.
How To Have A Glow Up
Depending on what kind of results you want to get out of your glow up, you may be able to make little, easy changes or really big changes to glow up fast.
In this glow up challenge, we’ll focus on ways to glow up physically and mentally. These will help you look and feel your best, plus grow emotionally, mentally and so much more. There are some super easy ways you can glow up physically – even something as simple as grooming your eyebrows or whitening your teeth can make a huge difference.
As for a mental glow up, you can take up meditation, journaling, self care and other types of exercises that can reduce stress and improve your mental health.
As you can see, there are so many ways you can glow up physically and mentally! The options are really endless. Anything you can do that improves your appearance, mental health or physical body can be used as ways to glow up quickly.
Even teenagers or those still in school can use this glow up challenge to help them change for the better, feel more confident and improve their lives.
How Long Does It Take To Glow Up?
How long a glow up takes completely depends on your goals. For example, if you’re more focused on a physical glow up, there are many ways you can glow up physically to look and feel prettier with just a few simple tweaks.
However, if you’re on an emotional glow up journey, that might take a little while.
So your glow up timeline will completely depend on your goals. Whatever they may be, I’m going to show you ways to make it happen with this glow up challenge, no matter what your goals are.
Glow Up Challenge: What Is It Exactly?
A glow up challenge can be anything you want it to be ! You can focus on physically appearance or your mental health. It can be a week you devote to improving yourself or a month long challenge.
Listen, I know we’re all busy. As someone who works 40+ hours a week and runs this blog in my spare time, I certainly don’t have a lot of spare time to devote to myself.
But that’s what’s so great about a challenge – you can do as much or as little as you want. You can focus on quick changes that just take a few minutes or you can focus on truly evolving yourself and devoting as much time as you can into the challenge.
You can go on a year long glow up journey if you want! It’s all up to you.
If you want to know how to glow up in a month or a week, you’ll definitely need to set aside some time for yourself, but if you’re good with a slow journey, just go with the flow and with what you feel like.
A glow up can focus on your physical beauty, your health, your mental or spiritual health, your feelings and inner peace. A glow up challenge can truly change any aspect of you!
How To Glow Up Physically
If you’re focused on glowing up physically and wanting to look prettier or improve certain aspects of your appearance, focus on this tips. Keep in mind that appearance isn’t everything! But it can certainly help you feel more confidence when you like what you see in the mirror and feel confidence about your appearance.
Whether you’re wanting an overnight glow up challenge or something more long term, here are some ways you can get instant gratification as well as some things you can do to take you on a journey of bettering yourself.
Fix Your Posture
One of the easiest ways on how to glow up instantly! Sit up straight, don’t slouch, straighten your back, lower your shoulders and lift your head tall. Good posture will instantly make you look and feel more confident (plus it’s better for your back!).
Treat Yourself To A New Outfit
This is usually a good go-to if I’m having a bad day or you’re just looking for something quick and easy to look better. Find an outfit that’ll make you feel like the awesome person you are (and it doesn’t have to be expensive).
You can find some amazing and cute pieces for affordable prices at Target, Old Navy or even Poshmark! Loft is one of my absolute favorite stores for work wear and they have sales often so you can get some high quality pieces for a great price.
Another way to glow up physically is finding out what styles look good on your body shape. The key is to flatter and accentuate what you have! You can also figure out what skin tone you are which will help find the best colors for you to wear. Of course you can never go wrong with red! It’s been shown to attract attention.
Keep in mind that fashion is a great way to express yourself and have some fun! I love getting fashion inspo from Pinterest.
Go For A Quick Walk
We all lead busy lives, but taking a few minutes out of your day to squeeze in some exercise can make you feel so much better. You’ll feel more energized and it’s always good for the body.
Plus extra movement throughout the day can help improve your sleep, circulation and general health! It’s an easy way to lose an extra few pounds if that’s on your glow up challenge list.
Walking is one of my favorite things to do in the spring and fall – the fresh air and beautiful weather and scenery also help to boost my mood.
Change Up Your Makeup Routine
If you wear makeup, try changing up your look. For example, play up your favorite feature. If you like your cheekbones, do some contouring to make them pop. Or if you love your eye color, line then with a contrasting color.
I am not naturally good at doing makeup (especially eye makeup) so I learned by watching Youtube. So if you’re anything like me and don’t have a clue about how to do your makeup, try youtube for tutorials and makeup recommendations.
Keep in mind that you don’t have to get all those expensive products from Sephora either! The drugstore has SO MANY amazing makeup products that are just as good.
Tweeze Your Eyebrows
Such a simple thing can make a huge difference! Having well-shaped that fit your face will instantly make you look more put together. Try getting some brow stencils to help map out where you need to tweeze your hairs to give your brows more shape.
Or you could even try to do some DIY mapping with the help of some YouTube videos. If you’re like me and have sparse brows, look into microblading (seriously life changing!) or using some brow products to fill in and shape your brows.
Do A Facial
Book yourself a trip to the spa or do an at home facial to make your skin glow. Glowing skin will help you look healthier and more attractive. If you’re going the DIY route, start with a deep cleanse and gentle scrub, followed by a clay mask to shrink pores and fight breakouts. Then use a hydrating mask like a sheet mask or gel-cream mask. Finally, follow up with some skincare serums and moisturizers and a good eye cream. Your skin will be glowing! If you’re wanting to know how to glow up instantly, this is a great tip because it just takes about 30 minutes or so and you’ll have glowing skin!
Add Some Blush
Blush will instantly make you look more alive and accentuate your cheeks. It’s amazing what a little blush can do for your look. I love a good peachy-pink blush to really brighten up the cheeks! But depending on your skin tone, you may need something a little darker or brighter. It’s best to play around and just see what looks best on your skin tone.
Try some body bronzer to help give your skin a just-back-from-vacation glow. Not only will it help even out skin tone, but it will give your skin the prettiest color and glow.
A good body bronzer is perfect to use for a night out or when you’ll be having pictures made. It can help add color and shine to your skin to make your skin glow! It will also help to even skin tone and cover any imperfections.
When you have a little more time on your hands to glow up, there’s so much you can do that will change your appearance.
Whiten Your Teeth
Having a white smile is attractive because it’s a sign of good health, plus you will look better in pictures with white teeth. And you’ll feel much more confident showing off your beautiful pearly white smile!
Be Consistent With Your Skincare
If you want to know how to glow up your face, it all starts with good skin! Skin that glows will instantly make you more attractive. And if you’re new to skincare, you’re in the right place! I can teach you all you need to know about creating a good skincare routine that WORKS!
If you struggle with your skin, you know how detrimental it can be to your confidence and self-esteem. Fixing your skin can truly make you feel prettier.
To start, you’ll want to get the basics down pat. That means a cleanser and moisturizer. La Roche Posay, CeraVe and Neutrogena are my favorite drugstore brands for gentle, well-formulated facial cleansers.
If you wear makeup, I highly recommend using an oil cleanser to break down stubborn makeup, then follow up with a regular cleanser to actually cleanse the skin.
As for a moisturizer, I love CeraVe! They have a lotion and cream that work for all skin types. It’s non-comedogenic and will help to keep the skin barrier healthy which is essential for healthy skin.
Once you get the basics down, you can branch out into serums, treatments, masks, etc to get even better skin.
And of course, don’t forget your eyes, they need love too. If you suffer from crows feet or dark circles, try and eye serum or eye cream to smooth and brighter.
Ditch The Harsh Products
Just because it’s on the shelf, doesn’t mean it’s good for your skin. There are so many skincare products on the market that have irritating and drying ingredients. Try to avoid sulfate, alcohols and fragrance in your products to reduce any irritation and dryness, which can make your skin dull, rough and even lead to breakouts.
Use A Chemical Exfoliant
Chemical exfoliants will work to remove the dead skin cells to reveal brighter, healthier looking skin. They can also help to fade acne scarring, fine lines, wrinkles and treat acne.
Chemical exfoliants can also help to get glowing skin and improve any type of skin concern you have. And clear, glowing skin is a great way to glow up and feel more attractive.
BHA’s like salicylic acid are best for those with acne or oily, combination skin, blackheads, large and clogged pores.
AHA’s like glycolic acid, lactic acid and mandelic acid are better for those with dry to normal skin types or those with fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and rough skin texture.
Retinol or retinoids are also a great exfoliant that can help stimulate collagen production, treat acne and reduce signs of aging.
Find Your Ideal Lipstick Shade
Before you can know how to apply lipstick properly, you first need to know what colors actually look good on you! When it comes to makeup, we all want to find the perfect shade for our skin tone and lip color. And the best way is by doing a little research and testing out some shades on yourself.
Drink More Water
I know everyone says this, but it’s so true! Water is not only essential to your body’s functioning, it also helps keep your skin hydrated, your hair shiny and helps to keep your skin clear. Drinking more water is one of the easiest ways to up your beauty game fast!
Not only does it help to keep your skin glowing, it can help aid in digestion and keep your body hydrated so you look and feel your best.
Drinking more water can reduce bloating as well, so doing one simple thing can have tons of benefits. If you’re bad at drinking water, try a cute water bottle with motivational quotes or times to keep you on track throughout the day.
Most people truly don’t drink enough water and other lifestyle factors can dehydrate us (like coffee or alcohol), so it’s important to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Studies have shown that women need at least 8 cups of water a day, plus more if you exercise or drink a lot of caffeine or alcohol.
Be More Active
This one is definitely tough, but you don’t have to commit to a 7-day a week exercise routine. Being more active can be as simple as taking a short walk around your neighborhood a few times a week.
Or, if there’s a specific concern of yours, like you want to tone up your arms, find some good arm workouts and do those a couple times a week to help build muscle.
Exercise will also help you sleep better which can help with our mental health. A good night’s sleep is key to being and looking your best so don’t underestimate this how to glow up tip!
Eat Healthier Food
I’m always game for pizza and cocktails, but it’s just not healthy! You will look and feel so much better by eating more nutrient rich foods on a regular basis. You don’t have to but out the junk, but eat it only in moderation.
Plus when you’re eating more fruits and veggies, your skin will glow, your hair will be shinier and you will be less bloated and tired.
Plus by eating healthier foods, you’ll be getting more vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that are essential to your physical and mental health.
Fake Tan: How To Glow Up Instantly
Being tan will make your skin look healthier and who doesn’t want to look like they just got back from vacation? I’m a religious self-tanner. Not only because I’m naturally pale as a ghost and don’t tan, but because I work in oncology and see the effects that sun-tanning and tanning beds have on patients every single day.
In fact, studies have shown that tanned skin is viewed as being more attractive.
Create A Sleep Schedule
Sleep has such a huge impact on our health. Whether you realize it or not, our body needs sleep to function properly. If you’re not getting enough sleep, it can be detrimental to your health.
Your body needs sleep to rest and recharge. So make sure you are getting plenty of beauty sleep each night!
Perfect Your Makeup Routine
A daily, easy and quick makeup routine is essential for every girl! You want something that’s easy and perfect for every day that flatters your face and accentuates your best features.
Finding your perfect makeup products can take some trial and error but once you do, you’ll be set!
I always recommend a nice tinted moisturizer for a dewy, fresh look that’s not heavy or cakey. But you can always go for a more full coverage foundation if you want more coverage.
Brows are super important so be sure to fill those in with a pencil or pomade.
You can also add a little blush and bronzer to the cheeks to contour and define your face.
If you want a more natural look, go for a lengthening mascara (don’t forget to curl your lashes!). Or for a more dramatic look, try a volumizing one. You can always add a little eyeliner as well if you want a more dramatic look.
You could even go for a lash lift or lash extensions.
How To Glow Up Your Hair
Get Regular Trims
Everyone wants long, luscious locks, right? Having pretty hair will instantly make you feel beautiful.
I used to be so bad at getting my hair trimmed and no wonder my hair was in terrible shape! When you don’t get regular trims, you are letting the split ends get out of control. Eventually the will start to split further and further up the hair shaft and will eventually lead to breakage.
Keeping your hair trimmed and getting rid of split ends regularly will help your hair grow faster and it will feel and look healthier. If you want to know how to glow up your hair, regular trims is the best way!
Do A Weekly Hair Mask
Hair masks are like really strong conditioners. They usually try to target a specific issue like breakage, dryness, frizz, etc. Doing a hair mask will add back nutrients to your hair that may have been stripped by shampooing or coloring.
Hair masks can also help prevent breakage, split ends and other damage. I like to do a hair mask each week to keep my hair as healthy as possible. Not only is my hair healthier, but it’s shinier, softer and more manageable.
Of course, if you have curly hair you’ll need something a little stronger to refresh those curls! Try something like Olaplex for curly hair.
I will forever preach about how bad sulfates are for your hair. Once I stopped using sulfates, my hair completely changed. Sulfates are essentially cleansers that are responsible for the lathering of shampoos. But they are also very harsh and strip your hair of it’s natural oils that help protect it.
Sulfates can actually make your hair more oily because your hair will overproduce oils to compensate for the lost oils. Sulfates can strip your hair of color, dry your hair out and lead to damage.
Learn To Style
No one’s hair looks good after air drying without any sort of styling. Depending on what style you prefer, you can do a sleek or bouncy blow out, straightening or curling your hair.
No matter what you use, always make sure to use a heat protectant to keep your hair healthy and prevent damage.
Change Up Your Part
Switching your part can make a huge difference in how you look! Certain face shapes look best with certain parts, so check and see what parts are recommended for your face shape.
For example, I have an oval face so I can do a middle or side part to flatter and accentuate my features.
Get A Color Refresh
Keeping up with regular visits to the salon will help keep your color more vibrant and shiny. You don’t have to change up your color if you don’t want, but just keep going regularly to keep your color always looking fresh.
Washing your hair too often can strip your hair of its natural oils, which can lead to an overproduction of oil (hello greasy hair!). It can also cause other issues like dry scalp, breakage and dryness of the hair.
Try to keep washing to a minimum.
I wash my hair just once a week and use a clarifying shampoo to help remove buildup and then follow up with a 2nd cleanse to make sure the hair gets clean. Washing 2x ensures I’m getting rid of everything and keeps my hair from getting greasy or weighed down super quickly.
How To Glow Up Your Skin
Use A Sleeping Mask
Think of a sleeping mask as like an overnight facial for your skin. Sleeping masks are designed to be extra hydrating and nourishing and usually target a specific concern like hyperpigmentation or irritation.
Just use it as the last step in your nighttime routine and wake up with glowing skin!
A Weekly Mask
A weekly clarifying mask can do wonders for the skin! A clay mask can help to balance oil production, unclog pores and prevent acne.
Don’t Forget The Lips
Chapped lips? Try an overnight lip treatment or mask to help hydrate, smooth and moisturize your lips. Or just plain ol’ Vaseline or Aquaphor will help and you’ll wake up with smooth and soft lips!
For even better results, use a lip scrub first to help smooth the lips and get rid of any flaky skin. Then slather with a good lip balm, mask or other treatment.
Silk is not only better for your skin, but also your hair. With silk pillowcases, there won’t be any friction between your hair and the pillowcase, so your hair will be silky smooth when you wake up. Silk = less frizz and less breakage.
Silk is also less absorbent, so you know your skincare products will stay on your face rather than be absorbed into your pillowcase.irst
Hands & Feet
Many people neglect their hands and feet (I’m super guilty!). Especially now that it’s getting warmer, you want your feet to be sandal ready, right? Soak your feet in warm water and go to town with a pumice stone. Then slather your feet in a nourishing foot cream, put on some socks and go to bed. You’ll wake up with the softest feet ever!
You can even try a foot peel if your feet are particularly bad. There are so many great options to do an at home pedicure. Of course, you can always go to a nail salon to have this done as well.
As for hands, try a nice hand cream or even some moisturizing gloves while you sleep.
Take Care Of Your Nails
Keeping your nails trimmed and shaped can make a huge difference in your appearance. You don’t have to go to the nail salon every week to take care of your nails. You can learn to do a manicure at home or just simply trim your cuticles and polish with a clear gel to add some shine.
You can also do at home gel and dip powder nails if you want to try and save some money! Of course, you can always go to the salon if you want.
As someone who is prone to dry hands and hangnails, a good hand cream and cuticle cream is an absolute must!
If you have bad cuticles, you can try a cuticle remover gel to help trim and shape the cuticles to get them nice and smooth.
Don’t Forget The Neck
Many people forget to bring their skincare products down to their neck and chest. Your neck and chest age too! It’s so important to treat these areas like you would your face.
As you get older, it will be more obvious in your neck that you’re aging and making sure you’re treating your neck will help with this.
Update Your Wardrobe
Make sure you’re wearing clothes that fit and flatter your body. Having a go-to outfit you feel confident in is key! How you dress can drastically impact your mood and how you feel. Make some changes to your wardrobe by buying versatile pieces that you can mix and match.
I don’t know about you, but I had some clothes in my closet that are at least 10 years old and my style has completely changed since then! I recently sold them on Poshmark and made a little extra cash which I used to buy some new pieces that are more my style now.
How To Glow Up Mentally
If you’re wanting to learn how to glow up mentally, these tips will help you to become a more positive person that’s happy and at your very best self. These can trigger so much growth as a person! From finding out who you really are to practicing manifestation or daily affirmations, there are tons of ways you can glow up fast.
During the mental glow up challenge, make sure you’re putting yourself first. And no it’s not selfish! Say “no” more, listen to what you want and do that! Give yourself more time to yourself to rest and recharge and to take care of yourself.
Don’t get me wrong, I find this really hard to do because I work full time and run 2 side businesses. I’m a workaholic and find myself taking on too much and not giving myself enough time to relax!
This can lead to stress, fatigue and negative mental health so it’s important to really take time to relax, enjoy doing nothing and taking time for yourself.
Learn To Love Yourself
Go on a self-love journey and learn how to accept who you are, your insecurities and flaws. Learning to love yourself is being comfortable with who you are and once you have that, you can truly do anything.
This is probably one of the best ways to glow up mentally. Feeling happy and confident starts with loving yourself and being confident in who you are.
I personally recommend reading some books to help you on your self love journey. There are so many books out there in the self-help area and can guide you on this journey. Cause let’s be honest, learning to love yourself is harder than it sounds sometimes.
It’s hard to make changes when your whole life is a mess! Clutter can disrupt your work flow and waste your time. Like when you have to search through your whole house to find your car keys….
Find a dedicated place for important things like your keys, bill, etc. And take time to plan out your day or week that way you have an idea of how many things you need to get done so you don’t get surprised or overwhelmed.
Staying organized can especially be useful for teenagers, college students and moms who need a little help staying on top of appointments, deadlines, etc.
A great way to stay on top of things like this is with a good planner. This can be a physical planner, or a digital one you can make on your iphone or even ipad.
Grow Your Confidence
Being confident in yourself is truly one of the best things you can learn how to do. If you want to know how to glow up, then this is the best thing you can do! Being confident doesn’t come easy to most, but with some work, you can be more confident and feel good about yourself.
Never Stop Learning
Learning doesn’t have to stop when you graduate! In fact, you should never stop learning throughout life. You never know when a new skill or information could help you. Whether it’s taking a class for your job or learning the stock market to invest in your financial future, learning is a great way to continue to glow up throughout your life.
Journaling is a great way to start or end the day. You can write about how your day was, good things happened to you, what challenged you, etc. If you had a bad day, you can even vent a little and get all those feeling off your chest.
Meditation can truly improve so many areas in your life! Meditation isn’t just about sitting on the pillow in the middle of the floor with your eyes closed.
There are so many benefits! Meditation can help with stress, anxiety, depression and so much more. There are also guided meditations that can help with sleep, relaxation, social anxiety and more. All of these things are helpful, but meditation is especially helpful for getting to know yourself.
Meditation can help enhance self-awareness. You can get to know yourself at a deeper level, and therefore, grow as a person. And that’s what a glow up is all about!
I love using Headspace for guided meditations. Not only does it help my anxiety, but it’s also helped improve my sleep, mental health and stress levels! Seriously there’s nothing that beats how you feel after a good meditation session.
Create A Vision Board
Got something you want to accomplish or a goal you want to meet? A vision board is the perfect way to keep you motivated and on track to meet your goals! Whether it’s pictures of that house you’re saving up for or pictures of your dream school, each time you look at your vision board you’ll have tons of motivation to keep up the hard work.
How To Glow Up Practice Gratitude
Learning to be grateful for all that you have is one of the biggest things you can do to increase your happiness in life. When you realize all that you have been blessed with, you’ll quickly realize how lucky you are. Try writing down what you are grateful for each day. It makes a massive difference!
Get Rid Of Negativity
Negativity isn’t just draining for the person who’s being negative, it’s also draining to everyone around them. Always saying “no”, complaining about everything or always reacting negatively are all signs of negativity.
Get Rid Of People That Bring You Down Or Hold You Back
Let go of all those people who are negative or don’t encourage you. This goes in line with cutting out negativity. It’s best to surround yourself with people who hold you accountable, encourage and motivate you and will grow along with you.
You’ll never be able to grow as a person if you have negative people or people who hold you back around you.
Daily affirmations are a great way to boost your motivation and inspire you to be at your best! With continued use, you can make total mindset shifts which can benefit your mental health. You’ll become a more positive and happier person!
