The problem with most recommendations on how to get self tanner off is that they use ingredients like lemon juice, baking soda and toothpaste that are extremely bad for your skin. But when you’ve got date night planned and the palms of your hands look oompa-loompa orange, you become desperate. So if you’re looking for skin-safe ways to remove fake tan, you’re in the right place.

How To Remove Self Tanner

Self tan can be difficult to remove and when you’ve got a streaky tan, you need remedies that work. Wondering how do I fix streaky self tanner? Here are the best ways to remove fake tan quickly, without harming your skin in the process. I wouldn’t recommend any self tan remover diy recipes or anything involving lemon juice, baking soda, windex, etc.

How To Remove Self Tanner From Body

From streaky, orange legs, to super-dark elbows, here are some of the best ways to get off bad self tan from your body.

Shower Off

If your spray tan or self tanner has a color guard, simply hop in the shower and rinse off. Most of the time, once your rinse off the color guard, your tan will look much better and more natural. If your fake tan still looks bad, then continue on with these home remedies to remove self tan fast.

Oil

When you need to get remove self tan fast, oil is your best bet. Any kind of oil will do: baby oil, coconut, sunflower, etc. Slather yourself in the oil and let it sit for at least 10 minutes before hopping in the shower and exfoliating away. The oil will help soften your skin, making it easier to exfoliate the fake tan away.

Does baby oil remove fake tan? Baby oil itself does not remove fake tan, but it helps to soften skin, making it easier to exfoliate the self tanner away.

Exfoliate

Exfoliation is also one of the best ways to remove fake tan, but that doesn’t mean you can go crazy with exfoliation when your tan turns out bad. Exfoliation works best on older tans. Meaning, if you just applied your tan, it will be harder to get off.

I personally like to use Italy towels or exfoliation mitts to scrub off self tanner, but you can also use sugar scrubs, washcloths, etc. For best results, I recommend soaking in a hot bath for at least 10 minutes before exfoliating. Again, it will help the tan come off easier.

Here are a few things to remember when trying to remove self tanner:

  • Don’t scrub too hard – you still need to be gentle with your skin
  • Only exfoliate once a day – any more than this will only irritate your skin
  • You may need to do it multiple times – usually one scrub is not enough to completely remove self tanner, unless it’s been on for several days.

Tan Remover

If you’re a regular self-tanner, a tan remover is a good product to keep on hand for any mishaps. Tan removers help to remove stubborn old tan that you just can’t seem to get off. Plus, they also come in handy for when your spray tan turns out horrible.

All you need to do is apply the tan remover on dry skin, let it sit for at least 5 minutes (follow the directions on the bottle for best results) and then hop in the shower and scrub off.

Hair Remover Cream

Although not the best option, hair remover creams exfoliate skin which can help remove self tanner. Be careful if you have sensitive skin, as these creams can be pretty harsh. Just follow the directions on the bottle and wash off the old tan.

Go Swimming

Chlorine will fade your tan pretty quickly, so if you have access to a chlorine swimming pool, grab a friend and have a pool day!

How To Remove Self Tanner From Face

The skin on your face is much more sensitive than the skin on your body, which makes it a little more difficult to remove self tanner from your face. It’s doable, but I wouldn’t recommend many of the recommendations from above – they’re just too harsh for delicate facial skin. Here are the best ways to remove self tan from your face.

Exfoliate

Instead of using a sugar scrub, exfoliating mitts or other harsh exfoliators, simple try exfoliating the tan away with a washcloth or microfiber cloth. For best results, I recommend doing this after taking a long, hot shower to help it come off easier with less scrubbing.

You can also try to use chemical exfoliants to help remove self tanner from your face. I would only recommend doing this if you regularly use chemical exfoliants in your skincare routine. It won’t be instant, but it will help the tan fade quicker.

Oil Cleanser

You can use a regular oil like coconut, sunflower, etc. as long as you know it won’t break you out. I usually recommend using an oil cleanser on your face instead because of this. Apply the oil cleanser on a dry face and let sit for at least 10 minutes. Then gently exfoliate with a washcloth or microfiber cloth.

Tan Remover

Just like above, a tan remover will work the best if you’re trying to remove fake tan from your face. Just follow the directions on the bottle and gently scrub the self tanner away.

Dermaplane

Dermaplaning uses special razor to remove peach fuzz and exfoliate the top layer of your skin, which makes it a great option when you’re trying to remove fake tan from your face. Dermaplaning is perfectly safe and is a great skincare treatment. Be sure to check out my how to dermaplane post before trying this at home!

How To Remove Self Tanner From Hands

how to remove bad self tanner

You just bought a new raved-about self tanner and excitedly apply it, dreaming about that gorgeous bronzed skin, only to wake up with streaky hands, orange palms and knuckles that’s far from the tan you had envisioned. Then you find yourself googling how to remove self tanner from hands the next day. Here’s how to fix self tanner on hands:

Soak Your Hands

Fill up your sink or a bowl with hot water and add a few drops of oil (like baby oil) to help soften the tan. Soak your hands for at least 10-15 minutes (longer is better) and then gently scrub off with a washcloth or exfoliating mitt.

Exfoliate

You probably see a common theme here. When trying to remove self tanner, exfoliation is key. Your hands are pretty tough, especially the palms of your hands, so you can use sugar scrubs, exfoliating mitts, etc to help remove bad fake tan.

Tan Remover

Tan remover is one of the best ways to remove fake tan fast. Your hands tend to hold on to more pigment from the self tanner, so I would recommend leaving the tan remover on longer than you would other parts of your body.
