If you’re anything like me and put off getting your hair cut, use a lot of heat and color it, then there’s a good chance you have some damaged hair. Want to learn how to repair that damaged hair and keep it healthy?
Then you’re in the right place! This is my Ultimate Guide to PREVENTING and TREATING damaged hair.
In fact just a few months ago I had to get three inches chopped off because my hair was in such bad shape. I know three inches doesn’t seem like a lot. But, to me it was.
I love long hair. I want to keep it that way. Not cut it off! So, I decided to take action and change things.
Since my haircut, I have transformed my hair routine and my hair!
Some benefits I have noticed since changing my routine:
- Less frizz
- Shiner, softer hair
- Less tangles
- More manageable
- Less oily (insert post)
- Less frizz
- Looks healthier
- More volume
Sounds good, right? Let me tell you, it’s easy! With a few product swaps and a couple changes, you can have it to.
Protect Your Hair From Heat
If you use ANY sort of heat on your hair, you need a heat protectant! Like yesterday. This is how you prevent damage IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Heat Protectants add a barrier to your hair so that the moisture can’t escape. Many of them also have added ingredients to reduce frizz or strengthen your hair.
Just spray them throughout damp hair, comb through (with a Wetbrush!) and style normally. Some heat protectants come with the added benefit of giving your style hold. Look for a thermal styling spray or setting spray.
My favorite heat protectants:
- Kenra Platinum Blow Dry Spray
- Redken Pillow Proof
- Matrix Total Results Length Goals
- Not Your Mother’s Beat The Heat Spray
Change The Way You Brush
I know, brushing your hair seems simple, right? But, let me tell you, a lot of you are doing it WRONG.
Sloppily brushing your hair when it’s wet? Stop that. Your hair is so much more fragile when it’s wet! Use a wide tooth comb or WET BRUSH .
I’m telling you, if you don’t have a Wet Brush, what are you doing with your life?
In all seriousness, Wet Brushes changed. my. life. Forever.
Gone are the days I spend 30 minutes brushing my hair after a shower. No more headaches from detangling my hair. Less breakage from brushing it with a regular brush.
It took me forever to hop on the Wet Brush Bandwagon because I thought, “it’s just a brush, it can’t be that special.”
Well turns out, it is!
Thick hair, curly hair, short hair, long hair, thin hair. Doesn’t matter. You need it.
Your hair will GLIDE through the brush. The brush will detangle your hair EFFORTLESSLY.
Trust me on this, kay? Get you a Wet Brush.
Pamper Your Hair
Your hair needs love. Lots of love. Especially if you treat it badly. If you pamper your hair, give your hair what it needs, it will reciprocate that love.
Want shiny, smooth, soft, beautiful hair? PAMPER IT. All of it. It’s a must to repair damaged hair.
How do you pamper your hair? That’s easy!
Deep Conditioners. Hair Masks. Treatments.
Any of them. Or all three!
These will repair damage, moisturize, strengthen. Your hair will love you.
The good thing about these is that there are so many to chose from depending on your specific concerns and goals.
My favorite place to shop for hair treatments is Ulta. They have a huge collection and even sample size packets for you to try out before you commit to the big size!
My do’s and don’t’s for pampering your hair:
- Do it once a week
- Do it for at least 15 minutes
- Do use heat for an added boost (use your hair dryer or sit under a heater)
- Do focus the product on your ends
- Don’t go crazy with products- you only need one or two
My favorite hair treatments
- Briogeo Don’t Despair Repair Mask
- Olaplex Hair Perfector No. 3
- Redken Extreme Mega Mask
- Joico Damage Defy Mask
Silk Everything
No more cotton pillowcases that cause friction, and in turn, breakage. Get rid of those regular ol’ elastic hair ties. Instead, use SILK. Silk pillowcases and silk scrunchies.
Not only do they feel amazing, but they are so much more gentle on your hair. With the added benefit of reducing frizz. Win-win, right?
Although silk products are amazing for your hair, they can only do so much. These are better at preventing damage, rather than fixing it. But, they are still a good switch to make! Prevention is key!
Since I have switched to silk products, my hair has improved tremendously. My hair is less tangled and less frizzy.
Plus, I know I am preventing further damage to my hair.
Please don’t feel like you have to go out and spend $90 on a single pillow case. Cough, cough, Slip. I mean, you can if you’re feeling really indulgent. But, you can find silk pillowcases almost anywhere. Bed Bath & Beyond and Amazon both have a great selection at different price points.
And, Ulta has a great selection of silk hair accessories like scrunchies, sleeping caps, pillowcases and more.
That’s all, folks! With these changes, I was able to repair my damaged hair and, my hair has become more manageable and it’s growing WAY faster. Who doesn’t want that?! What’s your favorite way to repair hair damage? I’d love to hear your tips below!
