Having a set self care morning routine is one of the best things you can do for your mental health. Starting each day off on the right foot will make your day run smoother and you’ll feel better physically and mentally. When I start my day off right, I always feel more productive and I accomplish more throughout the day.
Most of the morning routines that I’ve come across aren’t made for those of us that work a traditional job. We don’t have the luxury to wakeup when we want and work when we want. This makes it hard to be able to tackle everything they suggest.
So, I’ve come up with my own self care morning routine for us that don’t have the freedom to make their own schedule. And you don’t have to wake up at the crack of dawn, either. I do this morning self care routine every single day to make sure I start my day off on track.
Give Yourself More Time
When you have more time in the morning you can to go at your own pace without being rushed. When you give yourself the bare minimum amount of time, you’re setting your day up for failure.
I used to sleep in as much as I could, without giving myself plenty of time. Because of this I was never able to get everything done. Which, in turn, made me feel like I wasn’t being productive enough. My mornings used to be rushed and I felt overwhelmed before my day had really even started!
Once I started giving myself more time, I was able to start my day off relaxed and productive. This put me in a good mood to start, and I could get so much more accomplished. It feels so amazing to get things checked off my to do list before I even leave for work!
Coffee Time
My favorite part of the day is when I drink my morning coffee. I’m definitely not a morning person, and I really don’t like to talk to anyone until I’ve woken up a bit.
So, I make my cup of coffee, and go sit in my bed while I drink it. I usually take about 20-30 minutes to finish my cup. But it’s 30 minutes of peace and quiet for me. Sometimes I’ll watch a little TV, play on my phone, read a book, or even just sit in silence with my coffee.
That time in the mornings is my “me” time. And getting that me time in first thing in the morning is the most important part of my day to ensure I’m mentally in a good place to take on the day.
30 minutes of calm, quiet me time before the craziness of the day starts keeps me sane and helps me face whatever that day may bring.
Pick Up Around The House
No one wants to come home after a long day to find clutter all over the house, a huge pile of dishes in the sink and an overflowing laundry basket. What’s better than coming home after a long day to a spotless, clean and organized house?
Taking a few minutes each morning to pick up around the house, do the dishes, or start some laundry will check things off your to-do list before your day even begins! Plus, you’ll have less you need to do when you get home, so you’ll have more time to watch your favorite show or read another chapter in your book.
I always take at least 5 minutes in the morning to do some light cleaning. I’ll put some laundry away, pick up around the house, or clean up the kitchen.
You don’t have to clean the baseboards or mop the floors, but just take few minutes to do something quick.
Design Your Day
Planning your day allows you to overcome overwhelm and ensures you’re able to get everything done even when your life is chaotic. Using a planner is the easiest way to organize your life.
I have been using Day Designer Planners for years now, and I credit them to saving my life while I was in college. I still use them today! Not only do they help me stay on track and organized, but the prints are beautiful and the planners themselves are very high quality and sturdy.
I’ve wasted money on cheap planners that fall apart and pages get torn easily. With Designer planners, I know that they will last as long as I need them to.
They even have a ton of free printables that you can add to go alongside your planner or use them by themselves. They even have a free meal planning printable you can use. Read more about how I plan meals for the week to save myself tons of time.
Adding planning time to my morning routine really holds me accountable to everything I need to do that day. When I wake up feeling overwhelmed because of all the things I need to get done, I write everything down. Writing it down helps me realize that it’s really not that much and is doable!

Aromatherapy
Add a little anxiety ease, stress relief, or a pick me up blend by diffusing essential oils. Aromatherapy is my favorite way to add a little extra something to my morning self care routine.
They’re great to help calm your anxiety or stress, or give you an energy. Which helps me make sure I can get everything checked off my daily to-do list.
I love to diffuse them while I’m drinking my coffee and having that calm, quiet time. They help give me energy to start the day and ease any worries I may have.
