I make it a habit to do some sort of self care act DAILY. Yes, daily. Self care doesn’t have to be fancy, and you don’t have to spend a dime! I’ve come up with some great ideas for self care that are totally free and I can fit into my daily routine.
Making time for yourself is so important. So what if you only have 5 minutes? It may not seem like much, but taking those 5 minutes to meditate or write in your journal can make a huge difference in your mental health and wellbeing.
Honestly, there are days where I struggle to get 5 minutes to myself, but I always find a way.
We constantly find ourselves with a never ending to-do list. You get home from work, only to have to cook dinner, do the dishes, clean the kitchen, start the laundry, get everything ready for work tomorrow. Before you know it, it’s late and all you want to do is crawl into bed!
I know the feeling all too well.
But, you need to put yourself first for once. You will be more productive and happier if you give yourself and your mind a break!
So, keep reading to find out my favorite ideas for self care that you can do anytime!
This is one of my favorite ways to practice self care! That time to yourself will also you to relax and feel refreshed.
Give yourself an at-home spa day complete with a relaxing bubble bath, sugar scrub and a face mask. Or, perhaps, book yourself a day at the spa with a massage and a facial. You could even go get your hair done and get a mani/pedi.
No matter what you choose, I promise you will feel 10x better.
Put Your Phone Away
Are you one of those people that scrolls mindlessly on social media all the time? I’ll admit it, I am too. Social media can be bad for your mental health, and it’s important that we all take a break from it from time to time.
Every once in a while, I challenge you to turn off your phone one evening and enjoy your time without it. I think you will be surprised how refreshing it is to get away from all the drama.
Yoga is one of my favorite ways to unwind and practice self care. And if you’ve never done yoga before, don’t worry. I used to think I would never be able to do it, but there are so many poses out there that are great for beginners and anyone can do! Once you do it, you will feel so refreshed and calm.
I usually do a yoga flow right before bed and it’s amazing for stress relief. Plus, it’s a great form of exercise!
I mainly use my Pinterest Yoga Flow board for my yoga sessions. There is a good variety in there, for beginners, or for those more advanced. I especially love the ones for sleep. You can also check out my post on my other favorite workout resources to find some yoga exercises.
I love books. I am a huge bookworm. Seriously, for Christmas and my birthday I get a lot of books. Since I graduated, I have a lot more time to read (which I LOVE).
Reading is definitely my favorite hobby. Reading allows you to escape from your mind and your life and dive into another one. When I read all of my worries and stresses just disappear.
Even just reading one chapter a day can give you that relief.
I also have a Books To Read Pinterest Board, if you’d like to check out what’s next on my reading list.
I am a huge crime junkie, so naturally, most of the books I read are mysteries, suspense and thrillers. If you like this genre, I’d be happy to send you some book recommendations, or even make a post dedicated to my favorites. Just let me know in the comments!
Many people find writing therapeutic. You can write about your day or jot down your feelings. Write down whatever you need to to release those pent up feelings and let your mind relax. Take a few minutes to think about how you feel and write that down.
It doesn’t have to be a whole book. Just a few sentences.
There are even self care journals out there that will help you along and ask you questions as a prompt.
You can even write down everything you’re grateful for and practice a little gratitude as well. It’s a great mood booster!
Watch Your Favorite Show
Tv is really underestimated as an idea for self care! Many people don’t consider watching tv self care, but it definitely can be.
How about binge watching the next season of Grace and Frankie? Or finally that new Netflix documentary you’ve been dying to watch.
Take your mind off of everything and do something that you want to do. Those dishes in the sink can wait till tomorrow.
Put yourself first and dive into that show you want to watch!
Meditation is a part of my daily routine, and it always will be. Not only is meditation a great self care activity, but it also reduces stress and anxiety and promotes better sleep.
I highly recommend meditation because there are so many benefits! Meditation is very customizable. There are meditations for literally everything. Giving a speech tomorrow in class? There’s a meditation for public speaking. Dealing with grief? There’s a meditation to help you cope and process your feelings.
Love chocolate cake? Make yourself a delicious homemade cake or pick a piece up from your favorite bakery.
Have a pair running shoes you’ve been eyeing? Get them!
Get takeout from your favorite restaurant and order anything you want!
It’s so important to indulge every once in a while! Now I don’t mean go buy something you want every day or indulge in a not so healthy meal three times a week, but every once in a while, treat yourself!
I personally love to cook and bake and it gives me a nice escape.
