Setting monthly goals can make some big changes happen in your life and put you on the path to success. Whether you have a big end goal you are working towards, or you are just trying to be more productive and organized in your life, setting monthly goals is the best way to ensure your goals comes to fruition.
When you start setting and achieving monthly goals, you are teaching yourself self-discipline which can benefit all aspects of your life, professional and personal.
Setting personal or monthly goals doesn’t have to be super complicated or complex. They can be little things like practicing meditation once a week or cutting back on how much coffee you drink.
Why You Should Set Monthly Goals
Setting monthly goals is particularly important if you have a big end goal in mind. You can set mini-goals each month, or even week that will help you get to that big end goal quicker!
If you have a big life or yearly goal that you are dreaming of accomplishing, setting goals each month is your best way to make that dream a reality! Yes, it will take some time, but by setting monthly goals, you are actively working on achieving those goals.
Making goals can also help you live the life that you want! You aren’t just going through the motions and living day by by. You are in control of your life and working towards something when you set goals.
And by sticking with your goals, you will teach yourself self discipline. Plus, when you do accomplish the goals you set, you will feel so proud and motivated. And be motivated to set even more (and bigger) goals!
How To Set Monthly Goals
Have you ever tried to set goals (such as New Years Resolutions) and they end up never actually happening? Yeah that’s definitely happened to me, too. The problem with most resolutions or goals is that they aren’t specific enough and they don’t create habits that help to achieve your goals.
For example, say you want to start waking up earlier, so you decide you are going to make that a goal. Well, that’s a great first step! But how are you going to start doing that? Are you going to just set your alarm and hope for the best?
If so, you will probably be very disappointed when you never achieve your goal.
Monthly goals are there to help you grow and work toward achieving your dreams and goals.
1. Set Clear Goals
Be specific when you set goals! Don’t just make a goal of losing weight. Instead, make your goal more specific. More clear. Losing 20 pounds. Or even losing 20 pounds in 8 months. That’s a perfect example of a clear goal.
When your goal is vague, it makes it hard to come up with a plan to make your goal a reality. Setting clear goals is the best way to set yourself up for success.
The more specific are you when setting monthly goals, the more likely you will be to achieve them
Remember, your goal doesn’t have to be big! It can be very simple like learning how to garden or sticking to a certain diet. It’s also to not go crazy and try to accomplish 20 different goals at once. Start with one or two and then move onto more once you have accomplished those.
2. Create A Plan
Now that you have your goal in mind, it’s time to take actionable steps to reach that goal! It’s helpful to create a plan of how you are going to achieve that particular goal. You have to come up with a goal setting process!
I like to break my goal down into steps to help come up with “mini-goals” that end the end will help me achieve my big goal.
A few months ago, I decided I wanted to start working out more regularly. My goal was to work out at least 3x a week. I made a plan that I would start slow. So, to begin, I started with super quick 10 or 15 minute workouts a couple times a week. Then I began to do longer workouts or workout an extra day.
A few weeks into it, I began to look forward to my workouts and felt great. This made me want to keep going! So I did. And I’m happy to say I’m still meeting my goal of working out at least 3x a week!
3. Set Yourself Up For Success
When you’re trying to accomplish your goals, you need to make sure you are motivating yourself and making it easy to work towards those goals you set.
Here are my favorite ways to keep that goal in my mind:
- Set reminders
- Leave post-it with reminders or motivational quotes
- Create a to-do list with your goal in mind
- Use a habit or goal tracker
- Tell a friend or family member so they can help keep you accountable and motivate you to work toward your goal
- Create a vision board

Keeping Track Of Goals
I personally prefer to write down any goals that I come up with and plan. But you can do whatever works best for you! Write your goals down, keep them on your phone or even just in your head.
I personally find it helpful to write down my goals, I think it makes it easier to come up with a plan.
My Goal Setting Process
If you’re wondering how do you set yourself goals? I’m going to share with you my goal setting process to help you accomplish your goals. Remember, this can be used for any goal! Professional or development goals! Anything you want to accomplish.
One of my goals since graduating college has been to buy my own house as soon as possible. I didn’t give myself a deadline for this particular goal because I knew I didn’t want to rush into anything if I wasn’t financially ready or the right house just wasn’t available yet.
So, that was my goal! I was going to work towards owning my own house.
To make that goal happen, I thought about what I needed to do to make accomplish my goal. At the time, I didn’t have a full time job yet and was still job searching. And I knew I needed a steady job and a down payment.
I jotted down some steps I needed to take in order to accomplish my goal.
- Have a steady, full time job
- Move back home to save money
- Save X amount of dollars each month
- Create a budget so I can save X amount each month
Those were my four major steps I took to making my goal come to life. And I’m very happy to say that I am still on track to accomplish my goal. I’ve stuck with my budget every month and saved my goal every single month! Breaking the goal down into little monthly goals is the best way to accomplish goals.
