Have you been wanting to get a tan without the harmful effects of laying out in the sun and tanning beds? Maybe you’ve been scared to try self tanners because you’ve heard horror stories. I know that was me a few years ago. Luckily, I promise it’s not that bad.
Once you get the hang of it, the application is a breeze! And before you know it you’ll have a beautiful glow and look like you just got back from a vacation!
I’ve been using self tanners for years now and I’ve definitely tried my fair share of horrible ones. Tans that came out streaky and orange, or ones that gave you no color at all.
I’ll be honest with y’all, I’m extremely pale naturally. Like white as a ghost. Growing up my friends called me albino as a joke. I also don’t tan at all. I burn super easily and then go right back to my pale skin. No color at all.
Growing up, I hated my skin. I was so self conscious, especially in the summer and blinding everyone with my white as paper legs. As I have gotten older, I have gotten over this. But, I do feel so much more confident with a tan!
I’ve been using self tanners for years now and have perfected my application to get the perfect, natural looking tan without the harmful effects of tanning beds or the sun! You can read my tips on how to get a perfect self tan every time here.
So, I am doing a round up of all the best self tanners that give a beautiful, healthy glow.
Before I get into the best self tanners, I do want to suggest you read my post on the best self tanning tips. This post goes into more detail on what a color guard is and the super important techniques you need to use to achieve a flawless tan.
St. Tropez is a great self tanner for beginners! It has a color guide so you can see where you are applying it and can tell if you have missed any spots. It also doesn’t dry super quick, so you have plenty of time to make sure you’re blending it in properly before it dries. This is super important for beginners when you’re getting used to blending it in! If it dries too fast before you can blend properly, you will have a streaky tan.
The color is a beautiful olive tone and looks very natural once fully developed. The color guard does come off a bit on the green side, so don’t be alarmed if you look a little weird at first. Once you wash off the color guard you’ll be left with a beautiful, natural tan.
The longevity is pretty good. I’ve tried other self tanners that last loner, but not by much. I think it’s important to keep in mind that no self tanner is going to stay on for weeks. Our skin is constantly shedding and being washed, so the tans do fade quickly.
No gross self-tan smell either!
Stickiness factor: 3/5
Longevity: ~6 days
Loving Tan is the self tanner I started with and it’s still one of my favorites today! This one dries very quickly so it’s not one I would recommend to beginners. Once you get the hang of the application I say definitely try it out!
I love this one because once you apply it, it feels like you didn’t put anything on! It’s not sticky at all. AT ALL. Seriously my mind was blown. This is a huge reason why I love it so much. I hate feeling sticky, especially in the summer.
The color is absolutely gorgeous. The color guard is more red toned, so the tan comes out nice and brown. Not orange. Brown. I prefer a more brown tan on myself, as opposed to olive. Some people might prefer an olive tan. It just depends on their natural skin tone.
You can put this on and head out the door without any issue!
The color fades very naturally so you don’t have to worry about looking weird. You’ll just gradually get more pale as the days pass.
Loving Tan’s tanners don’t have a smell, so it’s a great option for those sensitive to fragrance and you also don’t have to worry about that gross self tanner smell!
I started out with their Medium color and gradually moved up to their Ultra Dark. They all perform the same, it just depends how tan you want to be!
Stickiness factor: 0/5
Longevity: 7 days
I’ve tried the whole line from Bondi Sands and they are all great. I prefer their Liquid Gold range because it gives more of a brown tan.
But they also have their other products that have more of an olive based tan, if that’s what you prefer. I will say that these olive based products have a color guard that is very green. As in you don’t want to go out in public with the self tanner on. It washes off and leaves a beautiful olive tan. The final product is not green at all, so don’t worry!
The longevity is really good. It does fade throughout the week, but does so evenly so you don’t look patchy or splotchy.
Bonus points because all of their self tanners smell like coconuts! Their Liquid Gold Line is also very hydrating which I love. Some self tanners can dry out your skin and make you look like a snake. So, it’s important to have a hydrating formula.
The best part? Bondi Sands is available at Walgreens now!
Color: olive/brown depending on the specific product
Stickiness factor: 3/5
Longevity: ~7 days
Dripping Gold is my absolute holy grail, can’t live without product. If you want that just-back-from-two-weeks-in-the-bahamas glow, then this is your product. I can’t even begin to express how beautiful this tan is.
This is dark. I’ve used their medium, dark and ultra dark and they are all fabulous. Durning the warmer months, I use the darker colors. I am very pale naturally, and I love the color it give s me. I often get compliments when I use this tan.
Y’all. I’m telling you. This product will give you the most natural looking tan ever.
The color guard is very true to the final color. You can go out and about with no problem while it’s developing.
The tan lasts a full week for me, which is usually unheard of with self tanners. It also fades evenly and is very moisturizing.
Dripping Gold’s tanners do have fragrance in them, but they smell nice and light. Nothing overpowering and no gross chemical smell to them.
Stickiness factor: 2/5
Longevity: ~7 days
So, those are my absolute favorite self tanners to get you that beautiful and HEALTHY glow year round. I self tan weekly and feel so confident with a nice tan!
It’s important to me to not cause a lot of skin damage, and that’s where self tanners come in! They are very safe and healthy, so you don’t have to worry about age spots or skin cancer.
