Whether you like to admit it or not, we are all guilty of toxic habits. A lot of times we don’t even realize we are doing them or realize that they are even toxic. Toxic habits are not only bad for your mental health, but also your life in general.
I admit, I am guilty of many of these toxic habits, especially this day and age with social media. I do my best to try to avoid these toxic habits, but sometimes I find myself slipping up and falling back into these old habits.
But that’s okay! We’re all human and it will happen from time to time. Especially when life has you down. The important thing is to make yourself aware of the toxic habits and try to keep yourself from falling into their trap.
Toxic Habits To Quit Right Now
1. Being Too Critical Of Yourself
As they say, we are our own worst critic. You may feel that you’re not doing enough, not good enough, not pretty enough. But what you don’t realize is that you’re not seeing the good you have accomplished and the things you should be proud of.
Whether it’s getting a big promotion or your first job, be proud of how far you have come. Maybe it’s not what you want for the rest of your life, but you’ll get there! Give yourself a pat on your back and celebrate life’s accomplishments no matter how small.
2. Being Addicted To Your Phone

Whenever I have downtime, I am guilty of picking up my phone and getting on social media. This one is a very tough habit to break. But when I’m feeling mentally drained, I always try to take a break from my phone and social media.
I find that after a break my mind feels so much clearer and happier.
3. Comparing Yourself
You know the saying, comparison is the thief of joy? It’s SO TRUE. I am SO guilty of this toxic habit, unfortunately. Recently, when I find myself comparing, I will stop that negative mindset. This is another toxic habit that’s tough to break, but it’s doable!
When you are constantly comparing yourself, you are affecting your CONFIDENCE. Your mental health. Your ability. You can’t look at what others have and what you don’t.
You have to look at what you have and what you have accomplished and celebrate that.
Work on making yourself a better version of you and grow. Don’t mind anyone else.
4. Not Believing In Yourself
This happens all the time, you pass on a big opportunity because you don’t think you are good enough or qualified enough. Even if it’s something you really want!
When I graduated and started applying for jobs, I did this all of the time. I passed on so many applications. And you know what, they might not’ve been interested in me anyway, but it’s always worth the shot!
Believe in what you have and what you can offer and the rest will sort itself out.
5. Not Saying No
I, too, am a people pleaser and I hate telling people no! I’ve gotten better about this recently because I have learned how important it is to have time to yourself. You need some downtime every once in a while.
Don’t stretch yourself so thin and make sure you’re giving yourself some space. Quit saying yes to everyone who asks you to do something. If they’re truly you’re friends, they will understand.
Now I’m not saying you can’t enjoy life and have fun with your friends, but just make sure you aren’t doing too much all the time.
Just look after yourself.
6. Being A Pessimist
A pessimist always sees the negative in a situation. Yes, certain situations are no fun, but try to look on the bright side of things when you get stuck in a bad situation.
Try to find the good in a situation and remind yourself that this too will pass.
7. Holding Onto The Past
You can’t hang onto the past forever without it eventually affecting who you are now. Whatever in your past is haunting you, try to come to terms with it and get that baggage off of your shoulders.
You will feel so much better and be able to live a much better life when you don’t have all of that hanging around with you.
8. Not Sleeping Enough

I know, life gets busy and it’s hard to manage your job, school, social life etc. But sleep is so important to your mental and physical health! You should try to get at least 8 hours of sleep a night.

9. Keeping Toxic People In Your Life
Let’s be honest, not everyone is good for us. There might be people in your life who are toxic to you. It can even be someone you follow on social media! Whoever they are, kick them out of your life. It’s for the better!
10. Bad Money Habits

Now, I’m not saying you have to say every penny you make, but if you’re constantly buying things you don’t need an struggling to pay the bills, you’re only stressing yourself out! This will only negatively impact your mental and physical health, and could get you into financial trouble.
Make a budget and stick to it!
