You wash your face and expect to feel fresh and clean, but instead it feels irritated and tight. And during the dryer months like winter and fall, your skin is extra flaky and can peel easily, causing you to look red and feel itchy.

Dry skin struggles to retain natural moisture needed that’s needed to keep the skin’s moisture barrier strong so it can defend itself against irritants and other enviromental damage. Because of this, your skin may feel rough and look on the duller side. You may not be prone to acne, but constant flaking skin may seem just as difficult to manage.

Ready to get your skin glowing?

Here are some tips to get you started!

1) Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. The best thing to do for dry skin is to keep it moisturized! When it comes to picking out a moisturizer for dry skin, there are 3 key things you need:

  1. Look for ingredients like ceramides, fatty acids, and peptides to strenghten the skin barrier.
  2. Humectants like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and aloe will help lock in water to keep skin plump.
  3. Occlusives like shea butter, petroleum or waxes, oils and silicones will help keep the moisture locked in so skin stays hydrated and moisturized.

2) Ditch the harsh cleansers. Ingredients in soap and cleansers like fragrance, essential oils and sulfates can be harsh on dry skin. Instead stick with a gentle, sulfate-free, hydrating cleanser (be sure to check out my product recommendations below!).

3) Humidify. The enviorment you live in can impact how dry you skin is. If you live in a dry climiate without a lot of humidity, chances are you skin will always be on the drier side. This is especially true during the winter when you turn on central heating. Try using a humidifier in your home or at your desk to keep the air more humid. Your skin will absorb the moisture in the air to keep it more hydrated.
